There was no specific place for the parents to go with their children suffering from eye problems in Bangladesh before 1999. The first pediatric ophthalmology department was established in a very small scale in September 1999 in a local eye Hospital. Within few months it became apparent how big the problem of childhood eye diseases and blindness is. Children were identified routinely suffering from cataract a preventable cause of blindness in children. Many patients started flowing to the department. Most of the children were so poor that the family could not pay for the hospital charge even when they were advised for surgery. Many patients had to go back without surgery because of financial reason. Dr. Kazi Shabbir Anwar, a pediatric ophthalmologist, who started the department after his returned from Canada, talked to his friends for help and a small group came forward to support these children to get eye surgery in at least in one eye. That was the beginning of this forum unofficially. We acknowledge the contribution of Mr. George Lamb (USA), Md.
